As a well known leading environmentalist in the Northern Rockies, Steve Thomas brings a wealth of experience to the Sierra Club. Before joining the Club, Steve was the co-director of the Equality State Policy Center, a nonprofit Wyoming coalition fighting for fair taxes, environmental quality, and other progressive causes.

He also spent five years as the Wyoming representative for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and as the lobbyist for the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. Steve has a strong union background as the International Representative for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. In addition to being a small business owner and a Teton County Commissioner (Jackson Hole, Wyoming) for two terms, Steve has also been heavily involved in several political campaigns
